About
Actors Heart
**Mr. Barry Greco**
Born and raised in the small town of
Trumbull, Connecticut, Barry Greco has always been dedicated to performing. His journey began on New Year’s Eve 1959 with the opening night of the Starz Series, Magic City. Despite being asked to
cut his hair, which was over two feet long, Barry accepted the challenge and secured a 35-day booking for the first season.
His fascination with the industry and
his persistent efforts led him to become a stand-in on Magic City the following year. Despite a minimum height requirement of 6’3” for the role, Barry, who stands at 5’11.5”, ingeniously overcame
this hurdle.
He used four small 2x4 blocks in his
work boots, which he had from his recurring role as FDLE on The Glades, to meet the height requirement. Now standing at a height of 6’3.5’, he booked the gig, not only as Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s
full-time stand-in, but also for Danny Huston and many others.
Barry's commitment to his craft is
evident in his rigorous stand-in rehearsal schedule, having completed full second
team rehearsals totaling 1,051 hours in 75 days. His passion for teamwork working side by side with Danny and Jeffery. Showbiz has kept him booking roles ever since.
On a movie set, a **stand-in** plays a
crucial role in ensuring efficient and effective filming. Let's dive into the details:
1. **What Is a Stand-In
Actor?**
- A **stand-in** is the person who takes
the place of an actor to assist the camera department in various ways:
- **Lighting**: They help set up
lighting by standing in the exact spot where the principal actor will be during the scene.
- **Blocking and Composition**:
Stand-ins tweak the blocking (movement) and composition of the shot. This ensures that the camera angles, framing, and focus are just right.
- **Rehearsal**: Before shooting, the
main actors rehearse a scene. Once they finish their blocking, the stand-ins step in. They observe what the actors do during rehearsal and then re-create those movements while the principals are
busy elsewhere.
- **Types of
Stand-Ins**:
- **Utility Stand-In**: Primarily used
for testing lighting and shot composition. Physical appearance matters less; height should match the actor(s) they're standing in for.
- **Single Camera Stand-In**: Matches
the actor physically in terms of height, weight, hair, and skin tone.
- **Multi-Camera Stand-In**: Hired for
their expertise rather than physical similarity. They may act out entire episodes or scenes to establish blocking and dialogue before filming¹.
2. **What Do Stand-Ins
Do?**
- Stand-ins give the primary actor a
break during preproduction for scenes that require the actor's physical presence.
- They:
- **Stand, Sit, and Gesticulate**:
Stand-ins mimic the body movements required in the scene so that the production team can test how it will look when the actor performs the same actions.
- **Assist with Other Production
Tasks**: In smaller production teams, stand-ins might also help with tasks like testing audio equipment, setting up lighting, and rehearsing script readings¹³.
3. **Skills Needed for
Stand-Ins**:
- **Professionalism**: Despite the
excitement of being on a movie or TV set, stand-ins must maintain professionalism and focus on their role¹.
In summary, stand-ins are unsung heroes
behind the scenes, ensuring that everything is ready for the principal actors to shine on screen!
